Bizarro cringe sketch comedy

Paper.Read_watch_listen.15.jpg

There’s cringe comedy like Ben Stiller movies where everything goes wrong and then there’s cringe comedy by Tim Robinson that starts normal-is then gets weird and then takes a big turn and then blows up into something you can’t get out of your head and all of a sudden you’re quoting scenes, replaying the sketch again and again, months later still talking about it with friends and coworkers because it’s stuck in your head and you find yourself laughing out loud thinking about how magicians suck! That’s I Think You Should Leave (2019) on Netflix. If you’ve heard, “oh my god he admit it!” or “is it really in my cue zone?” or “the bones are their money” or “remember when I told you you could never be a writer because you don’t have a curious mind” - it’s from this show.

A powerful, rich, white family insults each other

I almost didn’t watch Succession (2018-) because it looked like white Empire, but thankfully everyone told me to power through the first couple of episodes to find the funniest show on television. Incredibly written, incredibly acted, this comedy-wrapped-in-a-drama about a media mogul family is a must-see for anyone who likes to pay attention when they watch tv. Don’t dick around on your phone! Every minute is action packed with “uh huh’s” and one liners like “sails out, nails out, bro.” It’s got people in power who are losers and people who are rich and losers and people that you think are feminist but are really just rich and awful. Who’s going to take over the family business? Who cares! Come for the daddy issues, stay for Cousin Greg.

Seasons 1 + 2 are on HBO.
